Degree Requirements

All Design students will complete 120 credits as follows:

18 credits  General Education
12 credits  AMPD Electives (non-YSDN, which includes 6 credits from the FA/1900 3.0 series of courses, outside the Design major)
12 credits  Free Electives (can be YSDN)
24 credits  Design Studies
54 credits  Design Practicum

First Year

First year students must enrol in the following:

  • Visual Language
  • Design & Image
  • Typography 1
  • Fundamentals and Methods: Visual Interaction Design
  • Critical Issues in Design

Second Year

Second year students must enrol in the following:

  • Typography 2
  • Typography 3
  • Communication Design 1
  • Information Design Concepts and Methodologies
  • Processes and Workflows: Visual Interaction Design
  • History of Design

plus one of:

  • History and Development of Typography
  • Evolution of Information Design
  • History and Culture of Interaction Design
  • History of Media in Graphic Design
  • Graphic Design in Canada

Third Year

Third year students must enrol in the following:

  • Research in Design
  • Design Placement
  • and 6 credits at the 3000 and/or 4000 level in Design Studies (see Program Handbook for current offerings)

Fourth Year

Graduating year students must enrol in the following:

  • Design Workshop
  • Professional Aspects of Design
  • and 6 credits at the 3000 and/or 4000 level in Design Studies (see Program Handbook for current offerings)
  • Students will then choose from a range of practicum courses.

Non-YSDN Courses

To graduate all students must take:

6 credits  Humanities
6 credits  Social Science
6 credits  Natural Science
12 credits  AMPD Electives, non-YSDN (Design) courses.

All Design students pay a flat rate tuition which entitles them to 36 credits per year from Fall-Summer. Materials and book fees are extra.

For students not in the BDes program, compulsory and voluntary supplementary fees apply.
